BMW is to recall the spirit of its much-loved '02'-series sports saloons with its next-generation 1-Series, according to reports this week.
The new 1-Series range could include a two-door saloon, and a lighter-weight, more performance-oriented model so far known as the '1-Series Super Sport', so as not to confuse it with the original M1 super-coupe.
This model will effectively be a modern-day 2002, but considerably more powerful. It's tipped to get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering up to 300bhp, with dual-clutch sequential-shift gearbox and a 0-60mph time of around five seconds.
The mainstream 1-Series range will continue with hatchbacks and cabriolets, though a small Touring estate may also join the line-up.
The 1-Series will get a longer wheelbase and more cabin room, though its overall dimensions will remain roughly similar to today's models.
