Motor Show: Detroit 2009: Toyota Prius

13 Jan 09 11:06

Toyota has finally revealed the Mk3 Prius, the closest rival to the Honda Insight also revealed at Detroit.

The new Prius gets a larger 1.8-litre, 98bhp engine and thus a total power output of 134bhp. The engine's more efficient than the current 1.6, however, and also promises a quicker 0-60mph acceleration time of 9.8 seconds.

A complete overhaul of the hybrid drivetrain - 90% of parts are new - includes a new electric water pump, measures to improve warm-up from cold starts, a new exhaust gas and heat recirculation system.

It has a three-mode driver-selection system: EV-Drive Mode, giving electric-only propulsion for up to a mile at low speeds, sporty Power Mode and a fuel-careful Eco Mode.

It'll now do around 60mpg (50 miles to the US gallon) - less than the Insight's 64.2mpg, but it is a considerably more powerful vehicle.

Aerodynamic enhancements, including channelling of the air across the flat floor, help the fuel economy further - Toyota claims 'the cleanest aerodynamic profile of any mass-produced vehicle in the world' - as do weight reductions, thanks to the use of aluminium for the bonnet, tailgate, front suspension axle and brake callipers.

The styling hasn't changed much, with the basic Prius outline remaining familiar. The roof is a little higher to the rear, enhancing rear headroom and overall length has been increased by just over half an inch. The wheelbase remains the same despite the new platform with much-modified suspension. Rear disc brakes are now fitted.

New features on offer include a solar moonroof, with solar panels which collect energy to power the ventilation system.

There's also a remote air conditioning system, parking assistance, LED low-beam headlamps and tail-lights, dynamic cruise control, Toyota's pre-crash safety system, lane departure warning, a rear-view camera, voice-activated satellite navigation and automatic notification of emergency services in the event of a collision, an SOS call button and stolen vehicle tracking.

Toyota promises improved sound insulation and refinement, as well as a larger cargo bay and more rear legroom, made possible by repackaging the battery pack and fitting new-design front seats.

Display features include read-outs from the steering wheel-mounted switches and a new Eco indicator advising on optimum gearchanges for fuel efficiency. The cabin is fitted out with plant-derived bioplastics.

The Mk3 Prius goes on sale this spring; pricing and specification for the UK will be announced nearer to launch.
