Fiat is to launch an ultra-economical two-cylinder petrol engine in 2010, according to reports in the Italian media.
This 900cc unit will come with 65bhp, 80bhp, 90bhp and 105bhp outputs, and will ultimately replace the 1.1, 1.2 and 1.4 FIRE engines currently used in the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia ranges. It can be turbo-charged and will be compatible with compressed natural gas (CNG).
The engine will be fitted in the so-called 'new Topolino' city car as well as in the 500, next-generation Panda, Grande Punto and Lancia Ypsilon. In combination with Fiat's Multiair hydraulic valve-actuation technology, it will produce carbon dioxide emissions of less than 100g/km. Further down the line, it will gain stop-start technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions even further.
Fiat is said to be considering the supply of this engine to other manufacturers.
