BMW is to fit its stop-start system, which cuts the engine when idling and then automatically restarts, into its six-cylinder engines within the next 12 months.
The system is already used in four-cylinder 1-Series and 3-Series models, as well as in the Mini line-up.
The first six-cylinder models to get the stop-start system will probably be in the 3-Series range, though ultimately it will be used across BMW's complete model line-up.
This measure may address falling sales of six-cylinder and larger-engined BMWs.
BMW has confirmed this week that it is to offer four-cylinder 3-Series models in the USA, and it is to increase production of four-cylinder engines. Sales of petrol V8 models such as those in the 7-Series range and X5/X6 have slowed right down, even in the US - a V12 is also now unlikely to feature in the new 7-Series range this time.
BMW is implementing a general policy of downsizing, and readjusting the capacity and focus of its engine production lines in Munich.
