More details have emerged about the Mk6 Volkswagen Golf, to be launched at the Paris Motor Show this autumn, following the leak of pictures.
Engines for the range are 80bhp, 100bhp, 122bhp and 160bhp versions of the 1.4-litre, the two more powerful versions turbo/supercharged TSI units. Further down the line, larger petrol engines - including a new 1.8 or 2.0 TFSI for the GTI - and an ultra-economical three-cylinder 1.2 will be offered.
Diesel engines include 110bhp and 140bhp 2.0-litre units; the lesser-powered model will return 52mpg and the 140bhp version 48mpg. Both meet the Euro 5 emissions legislation.
The DSG sequential-shift dual-clutch gearbox will be optional in all but entry-level models, the most powerful models getting a seven-speed version.
Volkswagen promises improved quality, with better soundproofing and revised window/door seals and reshaped door mirrors to reduce engine and wind noise.
New features include instruments similar to those in the recently-launched Passat CC, a fine-tuned stability control system, knee-protecting airbags, active head restraints, daytime running lights and rear seatbelt detection. Options include adaptive cruise control, adaptive chassis control and a self-steering automatic parking system.
Sales start in Germany in late October, with prices from €16,500; UK prices and specification will be announced later this year when right-hand-drive models go on sale.
