Steyr-Puch Haflinger
Austrian bike-maker KTM is planning to build a hardcore 4x4 in the vein of the Steyr-Puch Haflinger, an ultra-versatile off-roader built in Austrian 1959-74.
KTM, which has recently launched its X-Bow four-wheeled racer, is working on a project called New Haflinger, said to be a cross between a trial-bike and an SUV. Like the original Haflinger, it will be compact and lightweight, and it will be offered in open- and hard-top body styles.
KTM is planning to enter its New Haflinger in the 2010 Dakar endurance rally (in which it has long competed successfully with its two-wheelers) to prove its all-terrain abilities. Road-legal versions will be available shortly after.
Yet this is not KTM's only new car on the way; joining the X-Bow and New Haflinger in its line-up will be a selection of budget vehicles, all lightweight, high-tech and super-economical. Three models are reported to be under development in collaboration with Bajaj India: a four-seat city car, a three-wheeled tuk-tuk type utility vehicle, plus a super-cheap scooter.
These models, conceived with a view to European sales as well as use in developing markets, are all said to be compatible with an electric drivetrain as well as petrol and diesel engines.
