Volkswagen is developing a new-generation Beetle for launch in 2011 and is considering a number of different bodystyles, with a speedster-style two-seat roadster said to be under development.

The speedster will probably be a little more radical than the Ragster concept (Detroit Motor Show 2005), with a lower-slung, more cutaway body.

Reports also suggest that an SUV-style variant - as explored in 2000's Beetle Dune concept - is under consideration. The modern-day 'Thing', perhaps?

All these models are being developed off the current Golf Mk5 underpinnings, rather than the upcoming Golf Mk6 platform. Elements of the styling are thought to be influenced by the Up! and Space Up! concepts, which preview Volkswagen's forthcoming new city car range. The Motor Authority website reports that although the engineering work will be done in Germany, the final styling will be tasked to Volkswagen's Californian design studio. Beetle production is likely to remain in Puebla, Mexico, CEO Martin Winterkorn told Dutch paper Auto Telegraaf this week.
