A team from the Georgia Institute of Technology has created a compact car that captures carbon emissions and stores them safely. The by-products can then be processed back into new fuel, in an efficient recycling system.
The Georgia Tech car can run on conventional petrol or diesel, but has an on-board processor to separate out the hydrogen in the fuel. The hydrogen is used to run the car, as in a fuel cell vehicle, giving zero-emissions operation (the only waste product is water) and the carbon is stored in a liquid solution.
Research will continue to develop the process further, so it'll be some time before it's ready for a major manufacturer to use.
