Nissan FX45
Nissan's Infiniti division is to launch a 'new type of hybrid' powertrain in its new FX SUV.
The Nissan-Infiniti system will enable the electric motor to continue to assist the petrol engine at higher speeds and for sustained periods, offering significant fuel savings on the highway and motorways. Current hybrid systems such as that used in the Lexus RX400h, for example, leave the powertrain to work in petrol-only mode at higher speeds, with electric motor assistance for just quick bursts of acceleration. However, the Infiniti FX will still be able to run in electric-only mode around town and during stop-start progress.
This version of the FX will not arrive until the next decade, however. At launch in late 2008 (UK sales begin April 2009) the FX will come with V6 and V8 petrol engines only; a V6 diesel, sourced from partner firm Renault, will join the range in early 2010. The FX, an X5/Cayenne-sized model, will be launched alongside the latest G-Series saloon and coupe, and the smaller EX crossover.
