Motor Show: Detroit Motor Show preview: Saab 9-4X

Saab is to unveil a near-production version of its 9-4X crossover at the Detroit Motor Show next month.

The 9-4X is scheduled for sale in Europe and North America next year; it is based on a new platform incorporating elements of the GM 'Theta' underpinnings and the 'Epsilon 2' architecture, to be used for upcoming models including the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia.

The 9-4X will have engines including GM's new 250bhp/406lb ft 2.9-litre V6 diesel and the 300bhp/295lb ft 2.8 V6, as well as the latest turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and 1.9-litre diesel units. Developed as a rival for the likes of the BMW X3, upcoming Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, it won't be quite an all-out off-roader, but its version of Saab's new XWD four-wheel-drive system, as in range-topping 9-3 models including the Turbo X, will give it considerable go-anywhere ability.

The 9-4X isn't the only SUV-like Saab due next year, however; there will also be a 9-3X, a version of the conventional 9-3 Sportwagon estate with XWD, raised ground clearance and appropriate off-roader styling cues. Coming too will be a Cadillac-badged version of the 9-4X, to take the name BRX.
