New supermini to use Mini underpinnings
BMW is working on an entry-level supermini to fit in the range below the 1-Series, claims German magazine Auto Motor und Sport - and it'll be based on the same underpinnings as the Mini.
The front-wheel-drive supermini is said to be scheduled for 2010, and will rival fuel-efficient new upmarket models from competitors including Audi and Volkswagen. Adding such a small, efficient car to the BMW range would help the company meet European Union legislation restricting average fuel economy across its line-up.
BMW is said to be considering outsourcing the assembly of this car to Magna Steyr in Austria, due to limited capacity at the Mini plant in Oxford. Magna Steyr is also now thought to be in talks with BMW over construction of the Mini Colorado SUV, for the European market, though US-market versions will probably be built at BMW's own factory in Spartanburg, North Carolina.
