Bluetec C-Class
Mercedes is previewing its Bluetec diesel technology in Europe in the new C-Class.
The Vision C 220 Bluetec concept car shows off the new 170bhp/295lb-ft four-cylinder diesel engine, capable of meeting the 2015 Euro 6 emissions standards. The engine returns 51.4MPG in the C-Class saloon and will be offered in the US: European sales of Bluetec-equipped models, including the six-cylinder E 320 CDI Bluetec, will start in 2008.
The Bluetec system - licensed to Volkswagen-Audi, who will fit also it to selected models badged 'Adblue' or 'Bluemotion' - uses advanced exhaust catalysts and injection of a blue urea-based liquid solution to reduce exhaust emissions including nitrous oxides, carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbon particulates. This is fitted in conjunction with advanced engine management, a particulate filter, exhaust gas recirculation, four valves per cylinder and third-generation direct-injection technology.
