Ford Mustang Giugiaro
Fabrizio Giugiaro and the ItalDesign studio have developed a one-off Ford Mustang, revealed at this week's Los Angeles Auto Show. Made with the approval of Ford's design chief J Mays, the Turin-built concept is 30mm wider than the standard Stang up front and 80mm wider at the rear, with its bonnet lengthened and its boot reduced, giving it an even more purposeful fastback look.
It has vertically-opening electrically operated doors, a UV-filtering glass roof, new tail lights which nod to those of the 1964 Mustang, and louvre panels in place of rear side windows. It sits on new 20" wheels, and its interior has been finished with unique gauges and instruments and dark brown horsehide upholstery.
Ford Racing has gone over the 4.6-litre V8 engine, fitting a supercharger, fuel injectors as in the Ford GT supercar, a larger mass air meter and new air filter, and a modified exhaust and radiator system; power is upped from 300bhp to an estimated 500bhp. The Ford Racing Handling Pack - an option for the production Mustang GT - is added, with tuned suspension dampers, lowered springs and anti-roll bars, giving a ride height lowered by 1.5".
Fabrizio Giugiaro says that his creation 'drives as good as it looks. After taking it to the limits on streets outside of Turin, I can honestly say this car was well worth the 30,000 hours of blood, sweat and tears that we invested.' He is the son of ItalDesign founder Giorgetto Giugiaro - who created the Bertone Mustang back in 1965 - and since joining the family firm in 1990, has created cars including the Chevrolet Corvette Moray (2003).
