Motor Show: Paris: Honda FCX

29 Sep 06 17:07

Honda's next-generation FCX fuel cell prototype will form the basis of a low-volume production model in 2008. It has a fuel cell stack 20% smaller and 30% lighter than its predecessor's, but emits 14kW more power. The entire powertrain is 40% smaller and 180kg lighter than before. Honda claims that its energy efficiency is now 'approximately three times that of a gasoline-engine vehicle, twice that of a hybrid vehicle and 10% better than the current FCX'. Range between hydrogen refuelling stops has been increased by 30%.

Honda says low-temperature performance has improved and the system can now start at temperatures as low as -30 degrees C. Its modified dimensions and layout also mean the FCX gains a more spacious interior as well as improved overall efficiency.

Enhancing the FCX's environmental credentials is Honda's plant-based BioFabric, used for upholstery and door linings. Other new features include an enhanced shift-by-wire transmission and a new instrument panel.
