Bugatti Veyron - soon to be topless

A targa-topped version of the ultra-exclusive Bugatti Veyron is on its way.

This new version of the 987bhp supercar will have a removable laminated glass panel, but as this cannot be stored on board, the roof will also feature a fabric cover to be deployed in case of sudden rainfall - a somewhat compromised solution, but unavoidable due to the supercar's packaging. This system is under development at supplier firm Webasto, according to Edmunds.com's Inside Line.

The Veyron Targa will receive extra reinforcement around its windscreen and underbody to maintain its structural rigidity and, to compensate for the extra weight of this, it will have carbon fibre doors and bonnet. It will also feature a redesigned grille and new adaptive-beam headlamps, which the coupe will receive too.

The Targa's not going to be as fast as the 253mph Veyron coupe, however, with a top speed of just 217mph. However, this should still qualify it as the world's fastest open-top when it goes on sale in 2008.
