New Models: Frankfurt Preview: Peugeot's three-wheeled future

26 Aug 05 16:28

Peugeot 20Cup

Peugeot is to "tease visitors with a glimpse into the future" at the Frankfurt Motor Show - and that future appears to run on three wheels. The 20Cup concept car "reveals a number of technological advances that will feature in future models in years to come"; it combines an open roadster body and two-seater cockpit with a motorbike-style single rear wheel. It also previews Peugeot's upcoming contender in the Le Mans Endurance Series, although this will take "a more conventional form". The two 20Cup show cars in Frankfurt are each fitted with a 170bhp petrol engine, one of the first from the PSA-BMW collaboration and a unit which will also be used in the upcoming revised MINI range. This engine develops 240Nm of torque, and works with a six-speed sequential-shift gearbox.

Peugeot will be launching its 407 Coupe at Frankfurt, and the V12-engined 907 seen at the Paris Motor Show last year will make an appearance too. Peugeot will also show a concept called Moovie, the work of 23-year old student designer Andre Costa, winner of the Peugeot design competition launched last year in Paris. His prize consisted of a 6000euro cheque and the building of his design into a full-sized concept car by Peugeot engineers; a miniature 1.43-scale model of the Moovie will also be produced, and his future career as a car designer is no doubt assured.
