New Models: Details of Daimler Super Eight

27 Jul 05 15:34

Daimler's first new model for seven years will be available to order from November. The new Super Eight is based on Jaguar's long-wheelbase XJ luxury car, but the Daimler treatment ensures that the cabin will be finished with "unparalleled craftsmanship", apparently. Apart from some chromed sections of the grille and mirrors, unique 18-inch alloys and 'D' badging, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the XJ and the Daimler, but inside is a different story. Boxwood inlays set off the burr walnut dash and trim, and sumptuous touches like lamb's wool rugs leave you in no doubt that the Super Eight is a lavish chairman's chariot. VIPs sit in the rear, where four-zone climate control, colour-screen monitors for watching DVDs or TV on the front seat headrests, and electric reclining seats give a suitably sybaritic atmosphere. Flip-down trays with their own power points for laptops should appeal to the on-the-go business user.

But the Super Eight should be a wonderfully refined and quick drive, too. The engine is identical to that of the XJR's proven supercharged 4.2-litre V8, and develops 400bhp and 408lb ft of torque. The dash to 60mph takes just five seconds, and top speed is electronically pegged to 155mph. "Acoustic" laminated glass has been added to give extra sound insulation from wind and road noise.

Because each Daimler will be built to a particular customer's specification, there isn't really a price list as such, but the cost of the basic car will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
