Renault is celebrating 20 years since the launch of the Espace MPV, and the production of the 1millionth example. The Espace, developed in partnership with Matra, went on sale in July 1984, and although initial sales were slow, it started a trend in Europe for so-called multi-purpose vehicles, or MPVs, which were better-equipped, more comfortable and more car-like to drive than existing vans with passenger seats.
The first-generation Espace featured lightweight composite bodywork, up to seven independent seats and the choice of a 110bhp 2.0-litre petrol or a 88bhp turbodiesel engine; the Quadra four-wheel drive version joined the range in 1988. Second-generation models (1991) had upgraded seats and improved all-round vision, as well as styling changes. The 500,000th Espace was produced in July 1996, and the third-generation model introduced later that year. This was targeted further upmarket, and a long-wheelbase version, the Grand Espace, joined the range in January 1998. The latest Espace and Grand Espace IV models went on sale in early 2003, and are the most luxurious yet; they have also achieved a full five-star result in the Euro NCAP crash tests, and account for over 22 percent of all MPV sales in Europe.
