Volvo V50
Two new engines will bring entry into the Volvo S40 and V50 ranges down to around £15,000 from as early as next spring. WhatCar? also reports that a new Sport specification will be offered from October.
The new engines are both 1.6-litre units, though the petrol model will be sold only with the saloon S40. Presumably the diesel's extra power (110bhp versus 100bhp) doesn't struggle to pull the estate's extra weight. No performance figures have been released as yet, but expect slightly slower times than the 1.8-litre's 10.5-second dash to 60mph.
Sport trim adds chunkier bodykit for a meaner look front and rear, stiffer springs and dampers and big 18-inch alloy wheels. Slotting between the S and SE trim levels, Sport is available with all the engines in the range, and prices start at £17,500 for the 1.8 petrol.
