Secret ingredient : Under the skin there will be more components shared with the E-Class than previously, but not the bigger car's air suspension; that would add disproportionately to the cost, and shouldn't be necessary on a relatively compact family car. The engines will range from a 1.8-litre petrol four to a 400bhp-plus version of AMG's 5.4-litre V8.
