Buying an old banger for a few pounds, fixing it up and driving it thousands of miles across inhospitable terrain sounds a bit daft. But since the inaugural Plymouth to Dakar Rally in 2003 this very different 'trip of a lifetime' has mushroomed into a veritable genre. Keen motorists, mechanics and those with a taste for adventure and a keen eye for the ridiculous have been signing up in their droves for all manner of wacky races.
Easier to roll car onto its side for repairs underneath. Not an approved AA technique, by the way.
