79 Austin A40 Farina (page 4 of 25)

With the revolutionary new Seven - the Mini - on the way, Austin knew the rest of its range was about to look pretty dated. The A40 Farina (1957) wasn't all new - most of its underpinnings were derived from the A35's - but the Pininfarina styling certainly brought some much-needed Italian design flair to this family-sized model, which sold well internationally. It may have had an elderly chassis and the undersized 948cc A-series engine (increased to 1,098cc for MkII models) but it was very chic. The A40 Countryman (1958) was also the first series-production tailgated hatchback: until this point, separate-booted saloons were the norm.
