97 Triumph TR2 (page 22 of 25)
|
The first of Triumph's series of popular roadsters, the 1953-55 TR2 was an export success, especially to the US. In all, 8,636 were built. It incorporated the chassis frame from the Standard Eight saloon, the Mayflower saloon's coil-link front suspension and a twin-carb, 90bhp 2.0-litre engine from the Standard Vanguard. It's an unlikely sounding bitsa but much better than the formula suggested and capable of a claimed 108mph. It made its mark in motorsport, too; wins by privateer drivers spurred Triumph to establish its own competition department, which debuted in the 1954 Mille Miglia. Three near-standard TR2s put in a respectable performance at Le Mans in 1955.
