As post-war austerity bit, Rover needed a practical, simple utility vehicle to offer instead of its luxury cars. Taking its inspiration from the American Willys Jeep and conceived as a stop-gap, 1948's Series I remained in production until 1957. Adored by armies, farmers, explorers and rural families alike worldwide, the Land Rover (available in a variety of useful body styles and suitable for all manner of conversions) outsold Rover's cars for many years. The millionth, a Series III, was made in 1976. The range has gradually become more refined and more powerful, and since 1990 has taken the name Defender but has always remained true to the original concept.
