87 Jaguar XJ (page 12 of 25)

The first XJ6 of 1968 became the prototype for every Jaguar up to the 1990s, according to historian Eric Dymock, and ushered in new production and development methods at Jaguar. Early XJs - with the old XK's 245bhp straight-six and the E-Type's rear suspension - weren't that innovative, but set an appropriate tone as elegant, graceful and comfortable luxury saloons. Often let down by poor construction, the basic XJ formula was nonetheless classic and it remained little changed until the aluminium-bodied model of 2003, the first XJ fully developed under Ford ownership and one which can credibly be ranked alongside Mercedes and BMWs in the luxury car market.
