Project Bobcat was the right car at the right time: exactly the kind of practical, economical and affordable runaround people needed in the late 1970s. The Fiesta - Ford's first front-wheel-drive, transverse-engined model - was by no means the first tailgated hatchback, but it was better packaged than its rivals and at just 730kg it was great fun to drive. It quickly became the fastest selling car in Europe; two million were made by March '81, and three million by the time the MkII came along in '84. Produced for many years in Dagenham, the Fiesta has consistently been one of Britain's best sellers, and remains popular today despite much increased competition.
