30 Bentley 4.5-Litre Supercharged (page 5 of 25)

The 'Blower' Bentleys were made against WO Bentley's better judgment, at the request of Bentley Boy gentleman racer Henry 'Tim' Birkin, who wanted a Bentley that could hold its own against the new supercharged Mercedes. While his team managed only one first place at Le Mans, in 1928, in 1929 they finished second, third and fourth behind a naturally aspirated works Speed Six. Let down by erratic reliability, the Blower Bentleys were far and away the fastest cars on the track, and somehow they epitomise the spirit of the age more vividly than the more successful works cars.
