47 Thrust SSC (page 22 of 25)

The super-streamlined Super Sonic Car: the first land vehicle to break the sound barrier, and a land speed record holder at 763.035mph. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey turbojet engines from the Phantom fighter plane, the 12ft-long missile was piloted by Wing Commander Andy Green to its top speed in Nevada's Black Rock Desert in October 1997. Both Green and team leader Andy Noble got the OBE; the SSC is currently on display, alongside its predecessor Thrust 2, at the Transport Museum in Coventry.
