The 'British Beetle' was the first British car to sell a million. Effective and affordable family-sized transport to get the nation moving post-war, it was launched in 1948 and stayed in production until 1971. Developed by Alec Issigonis - who went on to make the Mini - initial 'low-lamp' Minors had an elderly 918cc side-valve engine, but modern monocoque construction, rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension with torsion beams. The Series II arrived in 1953 with the Austin A30's 803cc overhead valve engine and the more familiar front-end design: more than 1.6 million Minor saloons, convertibles, vans and practical 'woody' Traveller station wagons were made, and exported worldwide.
