The 1500cc A, which ran from 1955 to 1962, signified a new era for MG, ending the now archaic T-series, and introducing new construction methods, with its perimeter-frame chassis. Previewed by the EX182 Le Mans cars, which competed in the tragic 1955 race where more than 80 spectators were killed, it was an instant success, with 13,000 produced in the first year. Coupes followed the roadsters in '56, and 1,600cc Twin Cams went racing, though their reliability was poor. Ride comfort and refinement was bettered by rivals from Triumph and Sunbeam, but the A remains a classic of its time.
