The car-buying public wasn't convinced by the 'jelly mould' Sierra when it arrived in 1982. It was designed for optimum aerodynamics but, with its rear-wheel-drive layout, it was mechanically dated from day one. But then, in 1985, came the RS Cosworth, a 150mph, 201bhp road-going version of the Group A touring car with an immense rear wing, close-ratio gearbox and limited-slip differential. It was one of the fastest production cars of the time and the stuff of teenage fantasy. Just 5,000 of these were made, plus 500 RS500s in 1987, but many a three-door mainstream Sierra was turned into a replica& Later Sierra Cosworths, such as the Sapphire four-door, were less lairy but still desirable.
