Spy Shot: BMW 3-Series Touring and Convertible
BMW has adopted a carefully conservative approach with its new 3-Series saloon, and so it proves with the upcoming convertible and estate version. We've published spy shots of the convertible previously, but these latest ones provide even more clues as to the likely roof configuration - there had been some debate as to whether the new convertible would use a cloth folding roof, or follow the recent vogue for folding steel roofs. From the rear pictures shown here, though, it looks even more clear that this is a removable hard top - see the small gap-line where the roof meets bootlid, a typical characteristic of a removable roof. We wouldn't rule out, though, a radical cloth roof treatment such as the one used on the 6-Series convertible with its flying buttresses and vertical rear window - the hardtop could be in place to throw us off the scent.

Also spotted out testing was the next 3-Series Touring (estate), caught with virtually no disguises. Note the more dramatically drawn 'Hofmeister kink', BMW's trademark reverse-sweep kick at the bottom of the D-pillar. As with previous models, the steeply raked rear section of the Touring means that it's going to be more about style than outright capacity. And while insiders refuse to rule out a 5-Series M5 Touring, so we surmise that an M3 Touring isn't out of the question. Watch this space... Read the full 4Car Road Test of the new 3-Series
