| The GTI sits 15mm lower on its suspension than a regular Golf, and both springs and dampers are firmed-up. The anti-roll bars are 20 per cent stiffer, and the electric power steering has been programmed with a 'sporty GTI map'. Turning efforts are higher and self-centring is quicker; the steering feels higher-geared but it isn¹t. Most electric steering systems use a motor on the column, but the VW Group solution is a motor mounted directly on the rack. It drives the rack by its own secondary pinion, leaving the steering column directly connected to the other end of the rack. This gives a feel and feedback more like those of a conventional hydraulic system. |
