First launched in 1991, the GS-series is Lexus's contender in the BMW 5-Series/Mercedes E-Class/Audi A6/Jaguar S-Type sector. Its first two iterations have been very US-focussed, with an emphasis on comfort and luxury rather than driving pleasure, but this high-tech third-generation model has been developed with far more sporting aspirations. Rear-wheel drive, it comes with an all-new 3.0 V6 (245 bhp) or a revised version of the 4.3 V8 (279 bhp) petrol engine, and a hybrid petrol-electric model, to be called GS450h, will follow next year. Lexus GS (05- )
The Mk3 GS is 5mm lower than before, but revised seating arrangements mean there's actually more headroom. It's 20mm longer than the Mk2, but the wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) is 50mm longer, giving more legroom. The rear track (distance between the rear wheels) is 30mm wider, for more secure handling.
