| First launched in 1991, the GS-series is Lexus's contender in the BMW 5-Series/Mercedes E-Class/Audi A6/Jaguar S-Type sector. Its first two iterations have been very US-focussed, with an emphasis on comfort and luxury rather than driving pleasure, but this high-tech third-generation model has been developed with far more sporting aspirations. Rear-wheel drive, it comes with an all-new 3.0 V6 (245 bhp) or a revised version of the 4.3 V8 (279 bhp) petrol engine, and a hybrid petrol-electric model, to be called GS450h, will follow next year. There won't be a diesel version, however - with the bulk of Lexus sales in the USA, developing such a model wasn't deemed worthwhile...

| The GS isn't a huge seller, with only a few hundred sold in the UK in recent years, but Lexus plans to sell a good 2500 in 2006, this model's first full year on sale. This is part of a worldwide expansion plan; Lexus recently launched in Japan, and it is opening a number of new dealerships across Europe in coming years. The bulk of Lexus sales are in the USA, however - 290,000 cars in total in 2004, compared to 25,000 in Europe. |
