Ferrari has revealed its replacement for the 360 Modena, the F430. It's an aluminium-constructed, mid-engined two-seater, with a compact, 90-degree V8 engine, though with some 483bhp, it's significantly more powerful than the 394bhp 360 Modena, as Ferrari tries to keep pace with the car's nearest rival, Lamborghini's 493bhp Gallardo.

| New engine, new voice: This first of Ferrari's new generation of V8 engines uses the same block casting as Maserati's V8, but is a dry-sump engine with three scavenge pumps (so oil is always picked up from the bottom of the engine regardless of cornering, braking and acceleration forces) and the main bearings held by a baseplate that doubles as the engine's bottom cover. The crankshaft is Ferrari's usual 'flat plane' component with crank throws 180 degrees apart, as in a straight-four engine. The firing intervals this gives are what gives the engine its particular sound, and they also improve power and torque at the expense of a little harshness (as if it mattered in a Ferrari). There are four valves per cylinder instead of the former five, very straight ports, hydraulic tappets and variable timing for both the inlet and the exhaust cams. The engine is lower than the 360's, which in turn lowers the F430's centre of gravity. |
