Well, I'm not feeling any more passionate about the Auris than I did last time I checked in, but it has, at least, slotted itself usefully into my life. I don't wake up in the morning and leap out of bed with excitement at the thought of driving it, but it's meeting my needs in an absolutely satisfactory fashion.

As a hoarder, collector and general accumulator of superfluous rubbish, I have to clear out my attic, garden shed and 'study' (actually a walk-in-wardrobe-cum-box-room with a computer in the corner) on a regular basis and operate a strict one-in, one-out policy with my car boot sale/charity shop finds.

More room than you'd think

So it was time to do a car boot stall myself and, with editor Colin pulling rank and taking the Skoda Roomster for a trip to the tip, and my boyfriend running off with our Audi 80 Avant on a stag weekend, I wasn't happy to be left with the Auris.

As it turned out, the Auris accommodated more than I thought it would. Although its load aperture is relatively narrow, the load bay itself is long enough to swallow two large clothes rails, a garden table and numerous bin-bags and suitcases full of clothes and fabric. The rear seats fold down flat and I doubt I'd get much more in the shorter Roomster, or even in my Audi. My shed's not empty yet, but I've made a good start on the latest round of clearing-out. Oh, and came back £230 in profit as well.

This unlikely load-lugger did good service the following weekend, too, for a rather different use.
