In the end, I got there in five and a half hours, at an average speed of 67mph, having taken a slightly lax view of the 70 limit. My average fuel consumption was 42.5mpg.
The return journey the next day was much more relaxed, as I didn't have a room full of hungry Scots waiting for me to arrive so that they could start their dinner.
So I just cruised along in a south-easterly direction, admiring distant lakes and snowy hilltops through the Roomster's many and varied pieces of glass, and wondering quite seriously about offering to swap my CDs with a complete stranger's the next time we ground to a halt in some roadworks.
And even though the relaxed nature of the return trip made it seem inevitable that it would be much longer, in fact it took only 15 minutes more - and the fuel consumption was a highly impressive 53.1mpg. Tortoise and hare, anyone?
And the next day I checked the oil: not a drop lower than before I set off.
