The most important item on the Porsche 911 Turbo's options list isn't the Chrono Pack or the stereo upgrade - it's a Porsche Driving Experience course.
With a car as awesomely powerful as the 911 Turbo, it's fair to say most drivers will run out of talent before the car does - which is why Porsche will give owners the extra tuition they usually require, concentrating on the areas where their skills need topping up.
The Precision Driving Course is offered free for buyers of all new 911, all Cayman and all Cayenne Turbo models. However, any Porsche owner can book a half-day or full day, £470 and £750, respectively. The programme is designed to be undertaken in the owner's Porsche but it's also possible to hire a car from them for the day. The tuition won't turn you into a track star overnight, but it will help you get the most out of your car and keep you out of trouble.
So I turn up at Donington circuit at 7am on a Wednesday morning. To say it's damp outside would be an understatement, as it has been raining constantly for over two hours.
I pull up to the pits and I'm greeted with a group (a steer? A handle?) of Porsche Driving consultants all huddled in one of the garages. After a quick check on the weather report for the day, Ian Halton, one of the senior drivers, suggests we go out and sample the track.
