Initially, the Mini was available as just two models. The One had a 90bhp 1.6-litre engine, electric mirrors and windows and four airbags. The Cooper bumped the power to 116bhp and added alloy wheels and sports suspension. They were both trumped in June with the arrival of the supercharged Cooper S with 163bhp, a bonnet scoop and 16" alloys. There was an almost limitless amount of mix-and-match options, grouped into Salt, Pepper or Chilli packs (see Special Editions). By October a four-speed automatic gearbox had joined, and June 2003 saw the launch of a 1.4 turbodiesel in One spec. The range was revamped in April 2004 with new clear-glass headlamps, restyled bumpers, with interior changes that included new trim, cubbyholes and more supportive seats. You also got Isofix child seat anchors. Much more dramatic was the launch of convertible versions of the One, Cooper and Cooper S.
