The other evening, however, a gurls' excursion to somewhere involving equal measures of Pinot Grigio and gossip dictated that the lot had to come out.

Well, I'm sorry, but I drew the line at removing Mercedes' own Isofix baby seat. It took me an age wrestling with an instruction booklet thicker than a circus strongman's arm to fit it. And there it's staying.

So it's just as well that we've had no cause, as yet, to fold down all four rear seats. All necessary haulage to date has been effected by simply flopping the rear rank up and down, which, because the seat bases automatically spring to the vertical simultaneously to the backs collapsing, is something of a doddle.

I should also point out that folding up the middle row of seats is, unfortunately, infinitely more complicated. Firstly, not only must you remove the headrests (even if they can then be stowed on the seat bases), but also the entire rear seat centre console has to be unclipped and extracted from the car.
