Decisions, decisions. There are such a lot of E-Class specification and engine combinations to choose from, and many of them are very good - but some are well worth avoiding. Firstly you should always choose an auto for the simple reason that E-Class engines always work better with them and it's what any future buyer would expect, so you will preserve some of your investment.
Avoid dull colours and aim for the brighter metallics instead, which are more popular at resale time. Also try to find the best specification your wallet allows, either Elegance or Avantgarde, plus leather upholstery.
Most crucially of all, you must buy an E with a diesel engine if you can possibly afford it. The 2.7-litre turbodiesel returns 43mpg overall and is refined and decently powerful, with a 135mph top speed, and even the fairly meaningless 0-62mph acceleration time is impressive at just over eight seconds. If you're feeling a little mad, and if mpg isn't an issue, the E55 is going to be one hell of a bargain supercar after a few more years.
