The new CL, in common with most new models these days, has grown since its last incarnation: at 5,065 millimetres long, 1,871 millimetres wide and 1,418 millimetres high, the body is 75 millimetres longer, 14 millimetres wider and 20 millimetres higher. The boot capacity has also been increased by 40 litres to 490 litres. As a result, Mercedes claims that this has created extra space inside the car.
As you would expect from a luxury coupe - especially one based on the S-Class - Mercedes has fitted out the interior with wood trim and leather upholstery in five colour combinations, in an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of an exclusive club.
The dashboard and centre console have been designed to be vertically arranged, the centre console and tunnel lining form a single unit that extends right back into the rear and carrying control features such as the Comand controller and providing stowage space.
In the top-of-the-line CL 600, leather trim, poplar wood and an Alcantara roof liner with quilted seams are combined with chromed door sill panels and floor mats with leather edging. The standard specification also includes multi-contoured seats with a massage function and seat ventilation.
On the dashboard, all the switches, keys and rotary controls are made from aluminium, or have a structured metallic surface. The highly polished black display surfaces are meant to contrast with the metallic, silver-coloured switches, which are internally illuminated and carry symbols relating to their function.
