Apart from those of us who are so brand obsessed that certain badges ensure the heart always overrules the head (a blue and white propeller springs to mind), we invariably buy our cars on the basis of comparison.
Seven-seaters are no exception and that puts the Discovery in an interesting position.
Land Rover is rightly proud of its mud-plugging heritage and has steadfastly stuck to its guns in ensuring that each new model can look over walls, tease people and leap tall buildings at a single bound - even if this does mean that their vehicles cannot always match their rivals for on-road comfort and dynamic ability.
Bearing this in mind, I felt it appropriate to sample just a little of the Discovery's off-road prowess as a timely reminder -before we get to the nitty gritty of everyday family life- of this added dimension to a seven-seater which, let's face it, will habitually be taxed by nothing more arduous that wet gymkhana grass and the occasional Chelsea kerb.
