So this is what the recession has brought us to. Last year, I spent my summer holiday driving from San Francisco to Seattle. 2009? I'm off to a static caravan for the weekend. Near sodding Margate.
To add insult to injury, it's tipping down with rain and blowing a gale as we pack the car.
I'm all for re-discovering the delights of the British Isles, but I'd rather be going abroad, weak Pound or not. It appears that, to misquote one of the finest British films, we may be about to go on holiday by mistake.
The saving grace in this expedition is the 4Car Fiesta. Not only are we less likely to break down than if we went in my own ancient Audi, but this Zetec S is quick enough that, if it all turns out to be too miserable, it won't take too long to get back to Brighton again.
