Peugeot 607 (2000-)
Prices: From £2,500.
Engines: 2.0, 2.2, 3.0 V6 petrol; 2.0, 2.2 diesel.
Watch out for: High-mileage ex-company cars without service history; electrical faults.
For: Comfy; huge boot; good diesel engines; well-equipped.
Against: Iffy electrics and electronics; no resale value.
Peugeot's large saloons have always been under-rated - 605, anyone? - but they're usually good to drive, and ride well too. The 607 is deeply unfashionable, but it's a decent choice. It's rather conservative-looking, especially in comparison to the closely-related Citroen C6, but that's no bad thing.
The 2.0 petrol is engine is a bit stodgy, and the 3.0 V6 petrol's not worth the extra outlay because its auto gearbox slows it down and it's little quicker than the 2.2. The diesels are, as usual with Peugeot, the ones to go for. With the 2.2 HDI, this is very nice old-school French saloon. Much more appealing than Renault's Vel Satis and Avantime.
