Lexus GS (1998-2004)
Prices: From £3000.
Engines: 3.0, 4.3 V8 petrol.
Watch out for: Unofficial imports without history; poorly-maintained high-milers.
For: Excellent reliability; solid build; high equipment levels; good-looking.
Against: Light steering; not as involving to drive as European rivals; feels a little dated.
The company car par excellence: the GS300, with its smooth six-cylinder engine, might not be the most exciting car to drive, but it can certainly eat up the miles with minimal hassle. Easy to run and own, it's beautifully-built and, given proper maintenance, should be utterly reliable. GS430 models are quicker and quieter still, and truly offer the full luxury-car experience.
The GS is a much more manageable all-round package than the huge, heavy LS. Revisions in 1998 yielded a shorter body, but with a longer wheelbase and improved cabin space, it's still relatively light and agile. SE models have the full spec that includes leather upholstery and heated seats.
