Few people ever got over-excited about buying a Passat, but it's a sensible option. The good ol' Passat is most desirable second-hand as an estate, especially with a diesel engine (the 130bhp 1.9's the best bet), but the petrol saloons are great value for money. The very silly W8's best avoided, and the 1.8 20v (turbocharged, 150bhp) have been problematic. The 2.0 and 2.3 V5 are good all-rounders and not too thirsty.
The Passat has never been the sportiest drive, so no point in opting for versions with big alloy wheels and stiffer suspension. SE models have the higher-spec audio systems and, most importantly, driver's seat lumbar adjustment and well-shaped, supportive seats for long journeys.
