Top Ten: The 4Car Top 10: £10,000 MPVs

08 Aug 07

Peugeot 307 SW (2002-)

Prices
From £7,000 (in seven-seat form)
Engines
1.6, 2.0 petrol; 1.6, 2.0 HDI diesels
Watch out for
Power steering failure, electrical/electronic problems, throttle faults, clutch failure
For
Fun to drive, car-like handling with MPV practicality, good engines, good-looking and well-equipped, comfortable ride
Against
Poor reliability record, rearmost seats suitable for children only

Really need that huge van-like MPV? Try this. The 307 SW drives like a car, not a van, yet its interior layout is as versatile as any of the MPVs. The rearmost pair of seats (optional when new, but factory-fitted and fully integrated into the structural design) is really only suitable for children or for occasional use by adults - no six-footer would want to do a long journey back there - but more than adequate for the needs of most users.

The diesel engines are preferred; the 1.6 HDI (110bhp, updated in 2004) is particularly economical and by no means slow, but even the 90bhp version is strong enough. The 1.6 petrol is a bit weedy for such a heavy car, but no matter: sit back, enjoy the ride and watch the sky go by through that full-length glass roof.
