The earlier Citroen Synergie/806/Ulysse (1995-2003) are now available for banger money, but these revised models are looking good value too. Diesels are the preferred options, but the petrols are worth checking out - they come up much cheaper to buy, so unless you do a huge annual mileage they will be no more expensive to own long-term.

Despite never quite losing the sensation that you're driving a large van-like vehicle, the C8/807/Ulysse are all easy to drive and manoeuvre, with well-laid-out cabins and plenty of versatility. Bonus points for the excellent crash protection, too.
